When you bring a new dog home, always assume he is not housebroken. Try putting a bell on your door and teach your dog to tap it with his nose. Pick a word to say when taking him out and always use the same word. Take the dog out on a leash to one area and say the word you chose. If he does go, give him a small treat, then bring him back in. If your dog does not go, bring him back in, hold him on the leash, wait a few minutes, then take him back outside.
Some dogs will relieve themselves twice in the morning. If you have two dogs and you’re having a problem, put one dog out at a time. All household members should use the same method. Some dogs will eliminate after eating, naps or play. Watch for sniffing or restless behavior —that means it’s time to take your dog out.
Try to put your dog on a feeding schedule. Remember, puppies go more often. Closely supervise your dog until he gets housebroken. If your dog relieves himself in the house, show him where he went and tell him, “No” in a firm tone and take him outside to his area. If he goes or sniffs the area, praise him and give a treat if you have one with you. If your dog is urinating a lot or small amounts often or seems to have no control, you should check with your veterinarian. Your veterinarian should always check out your dog; they can be your dog’s best friend.
